A1: The Secret Line was a series of routes in Southern Maryland used by spies and couriers to send secret materials from the Confederate capital in Richmond as far north as Canada. The Surratts’ home became a safe house for these people, and John Surratt, Jr. became one of the couriers for the Secret Line.

A3: Mary Surratt was accused of conspiring with John Wilkes Booth and others to murder President Abraham Lincoln. She was sentenced to death by hanging and was executed on July 7, 1865 – marking the first time that the federal government had put a woman to death.
